Alma Laura Hughes

Alma Laura Hughes, 72, long time resident of Arlington, Texas passed from this earth on September 27, 2016 in North Richland Hills, Texas. Alma Hughes was born in Glen Rose, Texas on what must have been a beautiful day October 22, 1943 to Elsie Moore Hughes and Charles Wallace Hughes. Alma grew up in Glen Rose and spent her last year of high school in Strathmore, California where she graduated from Strathmore Union High School in 1962. Alma was married to Joe Harvey Abbott on February 1, 1963 and moved into their home in Arlington. Alma and Joe had three children, Laura, Mandy and Terry. Alma was an excellent mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend to her very last day. Although she stood only five feet, two inches, Alma was a fierce protector and a one-woman army. She was also the consummate cheerleader and spent many years as the number one fan of her children and grandchildren. Alma enjoyed gardening and had an affinity for heirloom plants and nurturing delicate cuttings from special friends, family and places she had visited. She loved English roses, irises, shade trees, antiques, collectibles and summers. Alma’s numerous eclectic interests kept her life interesting and fun. Alma’s love and compassion for her others kept her constantly working to mend those around her and eventually led her into the field of nursing. She graduated TCJC with a degree in Nursing. She adored being a registered nurse and spent her yeas working at Arlington Memorial Hospital and Texas Osteopathic Hospital. Alma attended Fielder Road Baptist Church in Arlington. Her faith in and love of Jesus, and the immense love and affection for her children, grandchildren and parents was her guiding light throughout her life. Alma missed her parents very much, and in the end, knew they were there to receive her back into their loving arms. Jesus came to carry our precious mother’s eternal spirit home on September 27th, 2016 to be joyously reunited with her Lord and her “Momma” and “Daddy”. Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Elsie and Charles and sisters, Billie Marie Thompson Mary Bob Waldie, Jackie Ruth Veal and brothers Charles Tommy Hughes, and Harold Haydon “Bo” Hughes. Alma is survived by her sister, Betty Lou Blalock and three children Laura, Mandy and Terry and grandchildren Corie, Cali, Emily, Casey, Torie, Matthew, Tucker and Wyatt..
