Samuel Grant Morgan

August 10, 1987 - August 28, 2016

Sergeant Samuel Grant Morgan "Sam" died suddenly on August 28, 2016 near Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, where he was stationed. He was 29 years old. Called "Grant" by his family, he was born in San Angelo, Texas on August 10, 1987. He was gifted with a brilliant mind and a deep love of learning. His appetite for knowledge was insatiable. Drawn equally to fiction and non-fiction, he was a voracious reader; fascinated by science and computers, he had recently engineered his own radio decoder and left behind a long line of disassembled computer equipment and other machines. Sam joined the United States Army in 2009 where his keen intellect earned him a spot in the prestigious Defense Language Institute of Monterey, California. Graduating with a high level of fluency in Arabic, Sam proudly served his country in the Army's intelligence unit by providing information that kept his fellow soldiers and countrymen safe and sound. He was held in the highest regards by his senior officers, respected by his fellow soldiers, loved deeply by his family, and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. Despite his brilliance and successes in the Army, Sam struggled with his place in the world, and was intensely private. Sam is preceded in death by his brothers John Joseph Morgan and Daniel Morgan. He is survived by mother Teresa Morgan of Ft. Worth; father Dr. Hardy Morgan of Hamilton; sister Margaret Morgan Steele and her husband Jay Steele of Southlake; his brothers and their wives, Dr. James and Lyndsey Morgan of Chad, Africa; Robert Morgan and Sarah Ciaccia of Washington, DC; and Dr. Thomas and Carley Morgan of Chattanooga. He is also survived by his grandmother, Lamonte Efird of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
